Photos of the Now Gone Metropolitan in Asbury Park

I took some photos of the Metropolitan Hotel a few years ago while scouting locations for a music video in Asbury Park, NJ (you can watch the video here). I got the photo on the left from Wikipedia because, for some reason, I didn’t take any wide photos of the whole building. You can find my gallery after the break. The album is also on my Pictures page with all my others.

I fell in love with The Metropolitan instantly. For some reason I’ve always had a thing for abandoned, decaying buildings, especially ones that used to be so active and prosperous. I can easily imagine this having been an incredible place to stay. It’d be fun to see some of the vacation photos and films people took in it’s hayday. Unfortunately, it came down in 2008 after becoming to run-down to restore. As is often the case, the history of places like this in Asbury Park makes for an interesting read.

Here’s a little from Wikipedia:

The main structure was a Spanish Revival style built in a rectangle, with a four story hip roof, central pavilion, two-story porticos with fluted Doric columns, and balustrade and enclosed porches. Decorative touches included the stucco surfacing, parapet roof and canales. The metal marquee was a later addition, and there was a newer motel wing on the east side of the property.
